Jag har försökt och se de två incidenterna som har drabbat IK södra inte som ett judo problem i första hand utan som ett samhällsproblem.
A very free translation of one of Kano's maxims : By developing youself to be a better person (morally and ethically in the first instance) you will contribute to making a better community and society (=samhälle).
This meaning was expanded in some of Kano's speeches.
I cannot imagine that Judo could ever solve all the problems of today's society....but it could have helped more - if only it had not developed into a fighting sport where the prestige of winning at all costs is the central theme.
Any judo club following Kano's original ideas for the use of Kodokan Judo has a central role to play in society.
Since the OS in Tokyo - judo has drifted steadily in 2 directions. The grassroots judo that still tries to save something of Kano's ideas and the brash, vociferous, chest beating contest judo that is steadily destroying judo's good image.
The club in Stockholm is not the only club in Sweden with problems. Unfortunately for them, the Stockholms club has always been the centre of controversy and so it is being hung out to dry!
As Judosnubben rightly asks - "How to solve the problem?"
The answer is, in my opinion -
1) It is too late!
or
2) Create "Sport Judo" completely separate from any connection with Kano and Kodokan Judo. Let the clubs who want tp preserve the original ideas in Judo continue as pure Judo Clubs. (That does not mean there would be no shiai - but it would be in forms that agreed with Kano's principles. There are quite a few clubs in Sweden who do not take part in today's accepted contest form - but have a wide activity and a large number of very happy and contented members.
I don't intend to get into any close verbal combat with anyone - Everyones views are of some value - even though they are often at loggerheads with each others.......
I have written and talked for many years about the problems that have now surfaced............ I am happy here in Japan ....I don't need or intend to start explaining everything over again....... :x
